Agnes Rwegasira Transforms Tanzanian Aviation with Vera Travel’s Revolution
By Adonis Byemelwa
In Tanzania, a remarkable story of entrepreneurial prowess and vision is unfolding, with Agnes Rwegasira leading the charge in revolutionizing the aviation industry.
From her humble beginnings to pioneering sustainable practices, Agnes’s journey with Vera International Travel and Tours Limited is not just about business success; it’s about transforming the way people travel and fostering economic growth in Tanzania.
Agnes’s foray into the aviation sector traces back to 1995 when she embarked on a career with Euro Central Company in the Netherlands. This early experience ignited her passion for air travel, setting the stage for her future endeavors.
Armed with a degree in Commercial and Business Administration from the University of Clermont-Ferrand in France, Agnes honed her skills in banking and finance across Europe, becoming fluent in Dutch and French along the way.
Reflecting on her early career and the inspiration behind founding Vera International Travel and Tours Limited, Agnes shares, “My journey into the aviation industry began way back in 1995 when I worked with Euro Central Company in the Netherlands.
That experience ignited my passion for air travel.” Her vision was further fueled by her return to Tanzania in 2006, driven by a desire to bring a high standard of air travel services to her homeland.
Despite facing numerous challenges, including securing capital in a patriarchal system, Agnes’s resilience and determination propelled her forward. “Starting with almost no resources and only two employees was tough,” she recalls. “Getting the necessary capital was a big challenge too, especially since the system back then made it difficult for women to secure loans.”
With Agnes’s financial expertise and her son’s banking support, they found a lifeline. Backed by their dedicated team including finance guru Tensa Rwegasira and marketing head Doris Kiondo, they tackled initial hurdles, laying Vera’s foundation. Agnes’s innovation and commitment to progress were key. “We overcame this by investing in training with the International Travel Association in Geneva,” she notes, “and adopting modern systems like NDC and GDS.” This shift to electronic ticketing streamlined operations, ensuring top-notch service.
At the heart of Vera’s success lies its unwavering commitment to customer satisfaction. Agnes emphasizes, “Staying ahead in customer service at Vera International is all about going the extra mile.”
Through continuous staff training and the integration of digital platforms for easy communication and bookings, Vera has set a new standard for excellence in customer service.
As a female entrepreneur in a traditionally male-dominated industry, Agnes brings a unique perspective to the table.
Her journey is a testament to resilience, innovation, and empowerment. “Being a female entrepreneur in aviation brings unique strengths,” she affirms. “Navigating gender challenges fuels resilience and innovation, turning obstacles into strengths.”
In an era where sustainability is paramount, Vera is leading the charge in championing eco-friendly practices in the aviation sector.
Agnes explains, “Sustainability is a big deal for us at Vera International Travel and Tour Company!” By partnering with airlines operating fuel-efficient aircraft and promoting electronic ticketing to minimize paper waste, Vera is committed to protecting the planet while delivering unparalleled travel experiences.
Looking ahead, Agnes envisions Vera as more than just a travel company; it’s a catalyst for economic growth and development in Tanzania. By expanding its reach, opening new branches, and making air travel accessible to a broader audience, Vera is driving tourism, stimulating local businesses, and creating employment opportunities.
In the sprawling expanse of Tanzania’s economic landscape, the journey toward prosperity is marked by both challenges and opportunities. Classified as one of the least developed countries by the United Nations, Tanzania grapples with the complexities of an economy heavily reliant on agriculture, coupled with the necessity of importing many daily consumer goods.
Despite strides toward economic diversification and liberalization, the nation continues to face hurdles such as inadequate infrastructure, limited development funds, and a shortage of skilled labor.
Within this dynamic context, the business environment in Tanzania presents a mixed picture. While the country boasts certain advantages such as a sizable market, a stable labor force, and macroeconomic stability, its global ranking in terms of ease of doing business remains relatively low.
The World Bank’s “Doing Business 2020” report places Tanzania at 141st out of 190 economies, highlighting areas for improvement, particularly in information and communication technology (ICT) application and infrastructure.
In the realm of air transport, Tanzania’s skies are teeming with activity, supported by a network of 59 airports scattered across the country. Among these, three international airports—Julius Nyerere International Airport, Abeid Amani Karume International Airport, and Kilimanjaro International Airport—serve as vital gateways for both domestic and international travel.
Additionally, over 300 private airstrips cater to the specific needs of mining companies and tourism operators, facilitating seamless connectivity to remote and scenic destinations.
The management of Tanzania’s extensive aviation infrastructure falls under the purview of the Tanzania Airport Authority, ensuring the smooth operation of airports nationwide. Yet, amidst the bustling terminals and soaring aircraft, a beacon of possibility emerges—Vera International Travel and Tours Limited.
Under the visionary leadership of Agnes Rwegasira, Vera International Travel and Tours Limited transcends the boundaries of conventional travel agencies, shaping the future of air travel in Tanzania and beyond. As Tanzania navigates the complexities of its economic landscape, Vera stands as a testament to innovation, resilience, and a relentless commitment to excellence.
In a world where possibilities are endless, Vera International Travel and Tours Limited redefines the very essence of travel, infusing each journey with purpose, passion, and unparalleled service. In Tanzania’s quest for economic growth and development, Vera emerges as a catalyst for progress, forging a legacy of impact that resonates far beyond the confines of the airport terminals.
