At Mabest Academy, Oke-Ijebu, Akure in an interactive section with the Principal of the college, Mr Olatunjoye Emmanuel who spoke about five good things that makes their school stand out among the schools operating within the domains of the Akure South Local Government and beyond in the state when Exponent Magazine News-Online paid a courtesy call to the school. The except below.
The principal said the school is doing well in the area of academic as the performance of the learners in external examination both local and international are good which makes it possible for learners to transit to the higher Institutions. His words, we give all Glory to God .And in the areas of academic we are doing well for the past few years now, we have been having good results both in external examination and our international examination”.
Another area mentioned by the principal was the area of Leadership training where the management of the school normally trained learners on leadership roles. According to him, Mr Emmanuel said ” we have programme called mentor mentee where students are divided into two groups where Teachers are to mentor them and look after them and their academic as well as moral level in the society”.
Similarly, the Principal also mentioned the entrepreneur skills the school is giving to the learners in order to inculcate in them the mindsets of entrepreneural business acumen for the purpose of making them self reliant. His words” Another area I want to talk about is entrepreneur aspects of the school where we engage students in pastry making and tailoring that would help them in future “.
Another one was in sports activities for the learners to develop their sporting talent and build up their team Spirit. He said though the school is still having difficulties in attending sports competitions outside the school because most of the sports activities or programs being organized by the government, the timing used to clashed with the internal academic programe of the school thereby preventing their learners from participating in those sports activities outside their school. But , internally, according to the principal, the school is up and doing in time of sports activities as they do engaged their learners in most sports like table tennis, Lawn tennis, Basketball court and football games.
In another development, Mr Emmanuel also explained that the welfare of the learners and the staff are giving more premium particularly that of the learners as the school have a package for them which was called ” operation give me more” It’s an opportunity for any learners to asked for more food from the School Vendor if they are not satisfied with the initial meal given to them and such demands usually honoured by the school authorities.
Speaking on the areas of further improvement of the school, Mr Emmanuel said the area of sporting was still a challenge to them as the school is still trying to look at the way they could be on the same page where the school could participate in the state sports competitions. He said since he became the Principal less than a year now ,that he noticed the school had not being able to participate in the external sporting programme of the government and that there was complaints from individuals that the ministry was not happy for that. He said the school was hoping to improve on that.
When asked why the school have not been participating in the external sporting programme? Mr Emmanuel said most at times the activities due fall on the time the school would be doing their periodic test, and parents don’t want to negotiate the academic exercise of their ward for sports activities that is outside their school. This is a major reason why we have not been able to participate in those sports activities outside the school. “We are looking for a way ,where if the calendar is out from the Government we will know how to make our own flexible so that we can blend in, because it’s a way of making ourselves recognized outside the school especially the ministry of education ”
The only challenge facing the schools now , according to him probably was the complaints that was coming from the learners that their social life in time of involving in extra curricular activities outside the school was not good enough but Mr Emanuel said the management is trying to improved upon this.
