Empowering Marginalized Children: A Journey with Mushemba Trinity School
By Adonis Byemelwa
Amid the challenges faced by marginalized children in the Kagera region and across Tanzania, The Exponent reporter, Adonis Byemelwa recently sat down for an insightful interview with Josephat Mushemba, Chairman of the Mushemba Foundation, and his wife, Leah Mushemba. Their commitment to transforming these children’s lives through Mushemba Trinity School is both inspiring and deeply impactful. Here’s a glimpse into their vision and the journey they’ve embarked on to provide hope and education to those who need it most.
Q What inspired you to establish Mushemba Trinity School?
When we visited Ijuganyondo back in 2007, we encountered a young boy who was struggling. He was using a fishbone to scribble letters on banana leaves because he didn’t have a pencil or notebook. It was heartbreaking. The boy came from a troubled family, with both parents grappling with alcoholism and conflicts that left him neglected. Seeing his plight and his desire to learn despite such harsh conditions was a wake-up call for us.
That moment stayed with us and made us realize the dire need for educational resources and support in our community. We knew we had to do something to help children like him. My wife, Leah, had the vision to purchase an 8-acre plot, and though we initially had other plans for it, we decided to dedicate it to setting up a school. Thus, the Mushemba Trinity School was born under the Mushemba Foundation. Our aim has always been to uplift marginalized children and provide them with the education and support they need to thrive.
Q: How does Mushemba Trinity ensure the safety and well-being of its students?
At Mushemba Trinity, safety and well-being are top priorities. We’ve equipped the school with smoke detectors and fire extinguishers in every wing to handle any emergencies. Our dormitories are secure, and we encourage children to speak out against any form of intimidation. Beyond physical safety, we focus on emotional well-being by providing a nurturing environment where students feel safe and supported. Our teachers are chosen not just for their qualifications but for their genuine love and care for the children, ensuring a safe and positive atmosphere for learning and growth.
Q: What distinguishes Mushemba Trinity from other schools in Tanzania?
What sets Mushemba Trinity apart from other schools in Tanzania? Well, it’s a combination of a few key things. Firstly, we focus on both cognitive development and life-long learning. We have a well-stocked library and a computer room with internet access, helping kids connect theory with practice and stay updated with the changing world. Plus, our creativity room allows them to explore talents in music, embroidery, pottery, and more.
Another thing is our dedication to enrolling a significant percentage of students from marginalized backgrounds. We’re not just about education; we’re about changing lives. And, of course, our teachers are chosen not just for their qualifications, but for their genuine love and care for the kids. They create a nurturing environment that’s hard to find elsewhere.

Q: Can you share some key factors behind the school’s consistent success in national examinations?
Sure! The success of Mushemba Trinity in national examinations comes down to a few key factors. Firstly, we have a rigorous selection process for our teachers. We don’t just look for qualifications; we look for passion and dedication. Our teachers genuinely care about their students’ success and well-being.
We also provide ongoing in-service training to keep our teachers updated with the latest teaching methods. This ensures they can offer the best possible education.
Another important factor is our holistic approach. We focus on both academic excellence and personal growth. Our students have access to a well-stocked library, a computer room with internet, and various extracurricular activities that foster critical thinking and creativity.
Lastly, we maintain small class sizes, allowing for personalized attention and support. This helps each student reach their full potential and perform well in examinations.
Q: How does Mushemba Trinity support students from disadvantaged backgrounds?
At Mushemba Trinity, supporting students from disadvantaged backgrounds is a core part of our mission. We ensure that a significant percentage of our students come from marginalized families. This isn’t just about providing education; it’s about changing lives.
We offer subsidized tuition fees to make education accessible. For those who still struggle, we often step in to cover additional costs like school supplies and transportation.
Beyond financial support, we create a nurturing and inclusive environment. Our teachers are trained to provide emotional and psychological support, helping students overcome the challenges they face at home. We also have special counseling services and safe spaces where students can express themselves freely and get the help they need.
Plus, we focus on holistic development, offering extracurricular activities and personal growth programs. This way, students not only excel academically but also build confidence and life skills that will help them in the future.
Q: What are the core values that guide Mushemba Trinity’s approach to education?
At Mushemba Trinity, our approach to education is guided by a few core values that we hold dear. Firstly, we believe in inclusivity and equity. It’s important to us that every child, regardless of their background, has access to quality education and growth opportunities.
Secondly, we prioritize holistic development. Education isn’t just about academics; it’s about nurturing the whole child. That’s why we emphasize not only cognitive skills but also emotional intelligence, creativity, and critical thinking.
Another core value is community engagement. We’re deeply rooted in our community, and we believe in the power of education to uplift not just individuals but entire families and neighborhoods. We encourage collaboration between students, teachers, parents, and the community to create a supportive learning environment.
Lastly, integrity and excellence are non-negotiable for us. We strive for high standards in everything we do, from teaching and learning to student behavior and school management. Our goal is to prepare students not just for exams but for life beyond school, equipping them with values and skills that will serve them well in the future.
Q: What are your plans and aspirations for Mushemba Trinity School?
Our plans and aspirations for Mushemba Trinity School are really exciting. Looking ahead, we want to expand our capacity to accommodate more students. There’s a growing demand from parents who see the value in our holistic approach to education.
We’re also keen on enhancing our facilities and resources. We aim to upgrade our library with even more books and resources that cater to diverse interests and learning styles. Our computer room could use some updates too, ensuring our students stay connected with the latest technology and digital learning tools.
In terms of programs, we’re exploring ways to enrich our extracurricular activities. We want to offer more opportunities for students to explore their talents and interests, whether it’s through sports, arts, or community service initiatives.
Community engagement is also a big focus for us. We plan to strengthen our partnerships with local organizations and businesses to create more opportunities for our students beyond the classroom.
Overall, our goal is to continue providing a nurturing environment where every child can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. We’re committed to adapting and evolving to meet the needs of our students and community, ensuring Mushemba Trinity remains a beacon of excellence in education.
